LAO RAI (6th July 2024)

"Lao Rai Statement”

Lao Rai comes from out mother language of Tetum more or less: immigrant in English or Outsider or Nomad.

Mama Bolu Ita: Our Mother is summoning us.

Lao Rai, a work of love and dedication, stands not only as a preservation effort but also a crucial necessity in maintaining our cultural heritage. In a world where globalization often threatens the individuality of various cultures, Lao Rai serves as a moving reminder of the importance of safeguarding our traditions to prevent cultural extinction. It is not merely a massive act yet but a proactive endeavour to ensure that our unique cultural identity endures the test of time.

Furthermore, through the metaphorical lens of the United Kingdom as a second home, Lao Rai explores into the complexities of cultural integration and preservation. Exploring the notion of a second home goes beyond the physical and spatial aspects, transcending into the emotional and psychological realm. It underscores the profound attachment and sense of belonging that individuals hold towards their cultural roots, regardless of geographical boundaries.

The conception and execution of Lao Rai spanned over a significant period, with meticulous planning and unwavering dedication driving the process for a compelling six months. The extensive duration underscores the depth of thought and consideration embedded in every facet of this initiative. From conceptualization to completion, every element of Lao Rai was meticulously crafted and nurtured, embodying a profound commitment to its underlying purpose.

At the core of Lao Rai lies the imperative to preserve, maintain, and promote facets fundamental to our cultural needlepoint – the people, language, culinary traditions, artistic expressions, and, most significantly, the authentic essence of the Timorese way of life. By encapsulating these elements, Lao Rai endeavours to create a comprehensive narrative that not only encapsulates the external manifestations of our culture but also delves into the underlying values, beliefs, and ethos that define our collective identity. It serves as a testament to the resilience and richness of our cultural heritage, celebrating the very essence that binds us as a community.

Lao Rai is a called of belonging to love, to serve and to live on.
